Abstract Ethnic discrimination is a serious problem in education. Previous quantitative research predominately focused on the consequences of ethnic discrimination. Very little known, however, about characteristics school context that influence initial experience This knowledge essential to support schools how organize way diminishes likelihood adolescents being discriminated against. study examines relationship between multicultural education and perceived discrimination, moderating role composition student population. Multicultural broad concept. The focus lies three main actors: policy from perspective principal, teaching perception teacher students’ teaching. results multilevel analysis large-scale dataset (N = 2715 students, 38 schools) collected secondary Belgium show students Belgian descent are more likely report by peers if applies or has high concentration with an other-than-Belgian background. Students background teachers policy. If perceive their pay attention education, they less teachers, but peers. not directly related nor does it play role.
